HAPPY LABOR DAY! We are CLOSED on Labor Day – Monday September 1, 2014

In celebration of Labor Day we urge you to sit back, relax and fall-arrivesenjoy the fruits of your garden labor. Harvest the vegetables and cut the flowers for a fresh flower arrangement. The Payne’s Nurseries Team will also be doing the same – since we are OFF on that day as well!

The Autumnal Equinox—the first day of fall—is just about three weeks away. After September 23, which will have equal amounts of daylight and darkness, the days will get shorter and temperatures will begin to drop.

Here are a few tips about what to do in September:

• Plant cool-temperature plants such as pansies, chrysanthemums, and ornamental cabbage and kale in containers.

• Sow the fall crops of lettuce, spinach, mustard greens, and other leafy salad veggies. Plant protection including cold frames, and breathable woven fabric blankets such as N-Sulate can extend the harvest several weeks.

• This is a great time to plant perennials. There’s still time for them to root in and get established so you have a larger and prettier plant next year.
