Expert Advice

pansiesviolas-grnhs With their happy faces in a wide range of colors, their cold-hardiness, and abundant flowers, pansies and violas look great in flower beds, tubs, containers, windowboxes, even hanging baskets.

Pansy is from the French word pensées (thoughts) and, in the nursery business, "pansies" refers to the larger-flowered plants.

The smaller-flowered plants are violas—sometimes called "Johnny-jump-ups." In the photo above, pansies are in the front, violas in the back. Both plants thrive in cool, moist fall conditions if they are regularly
watered  and"dead-headed" (i.e. the flowering stems are picked off when the blooms start to fade).

For  best results, feed pansies weekly with a high-phosphorus bloom fertilizer. Or, when planting, sprinkle the soil around the plants with a time-release plant food. Payne's has a great selection of fertilizers to choose from.
