In the fall and winter, Payne's pyracantha shrubs, Pyracantha spp., Firethorn, are bursting with thousands of bright orange berries. In spring they  flower profusely with beautiful white blossoms.

This broad-leaf evergreen shrub is particularly popular in New Mexico because they are well-suited to our climate and soil conditions. They like full sun and regular watering.

Pyracantha are vigorous, fast-growing shrubs that can grow up to 8 to 10 feet tall and 6 to 8 ft. wide.

Some species have sharp thorns along the branches which make them a good plant for creating privacy. That may be why they are often seen in parking lots, along the side of the road and around many public buildings.

Contrary to popular belief, pyracantha berries are not poisonous. They are in the family Rosaceae, along with apples, plums, and strawberries (to name only a few). They can even be used to make a tart jam or jelly — there are a number of websites offers recipes.
