Expert Advice
jupiters-beard-webJupiter's beard (Centranthus ruber) is a very hardy, drought tolerant perennial that is happy under a wide range of garden conditions. A native of the Mediterranean region, this fast-growing shrub grows up to 2 to 3 ft. tall and as wide. From spring through summer (and early fall) its stems are often topped with clusters of tiny, fragrant flowers  in white, pink, or rose, that attract butterflies.

Here's how to keep your Jupiter's beard happy:

• Plant in full sun
• Follow a regular watering schedule during the first growing season to establish a deep, extensive root system. Once established, needs only occasional watering.
• Divide clumps every 2 to 3 years in early spring.
•  Feed once a month with slow release fertilizer
• To prolong blooms, cut fading flower spikes at the base of the stem
