Fall isn’t just a beautiful season—it’s a great time to give your trees and shrubs a head start.
When you plant in the fall, the top of the plant may be slowing down, but the roots are still working beneath the soil. That makes it an ideal time to focus on what’s happening underground.
Start with good soil. Healthy, well-prepared soil gives roots room to grow and provides the drainage and nutrients plants need to get established.
Add compost. Mixing in quality compost can add organic matter and help improve soil structure, creating a healthier environment for developing roots.
Finish with mulch. A layer of mulch helps insulate the soil, conserve moisture, and protect the root zone as temperatures change. Just remember to keep mulch a few inches away from the trunk or stems.
By spring, your fall-planted trees and shrubs can already have an established root system—giving them a strong foundation for the growing season ahead.
