Payne’s Organic Soil Yard (POSY) has proudly served Santa Fe specializing in composting, mulching, and soil management for more than 26 years — supporting gardeners, landscapers, and the community with high-quality, locally made composts and mulches.

Since 2015, Payne’s Organic Soil Yard continues to be the City of Santa Fe’s trusted partner for the composting operation at the Caja del Rio Landfill.
Payne’s Nursery is responsible for the entire composting process at the landfill, including preparing, maintaining, and selling the finished product to local residents and businesses.POSY at the Caja del Rio facility processes green waste, food waste, manure, and other organic materials over a 14-month cycle.

WHY COMPOST?
One of the biggest keys to successful gardening in New Mexico is simple: MULCH. Compost-based mulches improve soil health, retain moisture, and support nutrient cycling, while decorative bark mulches can be used on top to hold compost in place and enhance appearance. Compost also works as an excellent soil amendment, adding much-needed organic matter, nitrogen, and phosphorus to Northern New Mexico’s naturally mineral-rich but nutrient-poor soils—helping plants thrive and supporting beneficial soil microbes.
Composting matters year-round, even in winter. Although decomposition slows in colder temperatures, organic materials continue breaking down, building healthier soil structure and nutrients for spring while reducing landfill waste and methane emissions.
