MULCH! MULCH! MULCH!

Early June is an ideal time for gardeners in Northern New Mexico and Santa Fe to refresh or add mulch to planting beds, vegetable gardens, and around trees and shrubs. As temperatures begin to climb and the summer sun becomes more intense, a layer of mulch helps conserve valuable soil moisture, reduce water evaporation, suppress weeds, and keep soil temperatures more consistent. Applying 2–4 inches of organic mulch now can significantly reduce watering needs throughout the hottest months of the season.
Mulching also improves soil health over time as organic materials gradually break down and enrich the soil. Around trees and shrubs, mulch helps protect roots from heat stress and minimizes competition from weeds and grasses. Be sure to keep mulch a few inches away from trunks and stems to prevent moisture-related problems.
Whether you choose bark mulch, wood chips, compost, or other organic materials, early summer mulching is one of the simplest and most effective ways to support a healthy, resilient landscape in Northern New Mexico’s dry climate.
