HOMEGROWN!

Many of the retail stores here in town have close to 2,000 sister stores across the country. It is no wonder that they can negotiate very low prices for the poinsettias that they bring in from out-of-state and sell in their stores.

We, at Payne’s have just two stores, one on St. Michael’s Drive and one on Camino Alire. We grow our own poinsettias right here in town. Because we do grow our own, we are able to pot them up in different size pots and bring in lots of different varieties.

This year we are growing 23 different varieties of which many are RED, but there are also many other colors. They also have very cool names like Viking, Jester, Winter Rose, Lemon Glo, Christmas Mouse and several of the Princettias, etc. Below is a sampling of the varieties. Each day as we come into work, we are amazed how much each plant has changed overnight.

Besides poinsettias, we also have Zygo cactus (aka Christmas) in different colors.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

ASK THE GARDEN GURU!

IS THERE STILL TIME TO DO SOME BULB PLANTING INDOORS AND OUTDOORS!

ANOTHER GREAT QUESTION!

In this week’s archived show from previous years, the Garden Guru said that there is still time to plant Fall bulbs outside, depending on the weather. However, he suggests that you plant some bulbs indoors. Lynn recommends planting Paperwhite Narcissus! Planting these will make a great project for you to do with your family.

Also, Amaryllis are an excellent choice to plant as well! These beauties will bloom whenever they want to bloom, making for a great surprise during the Holidays! Listen for more information about these wonderful indoor bulbs!

ZODIAC SIGNS AND GARDENING? HERE’S THIS CYCLES PROFILE.

by The Old Farmer’s Almanac

Here’s THIS MONTHS ZODIAC SIGN PROFILE AND HOW IT CAN HELP YOU GARDEN:

SAGITTARIUS (NOVEMBER 23 – DECEMBER 21 )
Sagittarius ends the fall. The seasons are about to shift again, so the expectation of change is part of your personality. With Jupiter (the largest planet in the solar system) as your ruling planet, you are partial to plants that grow bigger: Azaleas, rhododendrons, and rosemary fill the bill here. Giant sunflowers as well as beans and peas that climb tantalize your soul. You are fond of action and the outdoors; plants that spread out and seem wild and free excite you. Look for lily-of-the-valley or patches of mint in your garden. Quick and easy meals such as salmon and salad grace your dinner table, and popcorn is your regular snack.
